it works great. its not just a camera system either.. its a whole security system so even better.. and its wireless" What type of surveillance camera would be best suited for the entrance to my gated community? Our gated community needs a surveillance camera. Our gate was hit and broken two times, but we have been unable to determine who did it (probably am impatient driver). If we had a camera that could capture video for 24-48 hours (and then recycle), we could determine who is responsible for future incidents. Since there is only one entrance to the community (besides climbing over fences), this would also be a deterrent to criminals entering the community. There is a light pole with electricity near the entrance to the community, so power and view plane issues are not a problem. We just need to be sure the resolution of the images is sufficient to capture faily good images (license plate numbers, etc). This is Altanta, so severe weather is also not an issue. Finally, we are a small gated community, so we cannot afford very expensive options. Reliable, inexpensive solutions are preferred over high cost, high-tech solutions. water_skipper replied: "Silly answer - Hang a balloon full of paint so when they ram the gate with their car the balloon pops and gets paint all over their car. Just look for the car with paint splattered all over it.
Serious answer - I don't think there is a cheap solution. You can either buy a security camera system, which has a camera and a time lapse VCR or buy a camera to connect to your computer and use software to do the monitoring."
anthony h replied: "Check out and I believe they have a variety of relatively inexpensive cameras which will work for your situation.
I would definitely get a camera that has a weather housing for rain and bad weather (even if it's not severe like the snow you had a day ago!), as well as infrared capability for night views.
Pair it up with a digital recorder of some kind (also available at the same website) and you're in business." How to make a webcam into a surveillance camera? I was just wondering if an ordinary webcam may be converted into a surveillance camera that may be placed near and directly to the entrance door for security reason. Does it need a software? Please help. Thanks alot captain_harlock_99 replied: "It could be done, but unless you have the camera, cables and a USB amplifier, it would be cheaper just to buy a security cam setup from eBay.
Webcams are only designed to work on the 10 foot cable that is attached to the camera. Some cameras will function on a 10 foot USB extension cable, but thats about it. You might get another 20 out of it, if you put a USB amplifier in the line, or run a powered USB hub for the first 20 feet. Webcams are designed for indoor use. Some may not hold up well if used outside.
If you acomplish all that, and have drivers for the camera installed, you could use Microsoft's amcap program to monitor the camera in preview mode. It can be downloaded for free.
With wireless pinhole security cam kits on eBay so cheap, it just might be easier and more cost effient to go that route.
I hope this is helpful :-)"
Sales D replied: "you can purhase an IP surveillance camera for about the same price as a webcam go to"
Securicorp CCTV replied: "You can turn you webcam into a surveillance camera. It does need software though. Cheapest download is Windows Media Encoder free from, you can then select the webcam as the source. Windows Media can then stream the video over the internet in real time and record at the same time. However, the length of the USB cable is a factor and cannot be more than about 5 meters.
Another option is an IP camera, you can connect it to your PC or router and get the power source closer to the door. You can see a range of IP cameras at:
and there is also a link that shows a real time live demo of an IP cam and video of a news story on TV on how it works. Just a word of caution, if you dont know much about networking then get some help to install it." Why do most surveillance camera's have such bad quality? I am quite appalled at the fact that most surveillance camera's have the quality of a 30 year old image. If camera's were better, catching faces of criminals would be much easier. Why do local buildings, and areas invest very little in surveillance? Are they really that cheap?
true true.
Either way, it's still a shame. empenage2003 replied: "depends on who's installing them i guess. they're not all photographers after all"
pro_av_guy replied: "It's usually a case if the storage Media. Because owners want to capture as much video as possible and not take up piles of tape or lots of hard drive space, the video is compressed or derogated. The cameras are also usually not the best as far as lens's and the pick up device." How do I connect surveillance camera that broadcasts on the Internet? I want to set up an outdoor video surveillance and need to know what I need.
1. Need a wireless, solar camera because it will be installed 500 ft from my house. Do they have these?
2. Need an Internet camera that broadcasts on the Internet and saves the images so I can view it while working on the computer.
3. Night vision because there are no street lights here.
Please tell me which online stores have them and step by step instructions if possible. remailer000 replied: "Linksys Wireless-G PTZ Internet Camera with Audio WVC200 - Network camera - pan / tilt - color ( Day&Night ) - audio - 10/100, 802.11b, 802.11g - DC 5 V

I'm not sure how you would get a 500ft range... Maybe with a belkin PRE-N router it says on the box says it will get up to 500,000( 5 hundred thousand ) square feet OPEN RANGE. ( Meaning not a lot of trees. )
I think if i am not mistaken that the max range for a wire to be run is 300feet. But i could be wrong so that would not work for you.
With a good router you should be able to get it to work.
As far as a power source you would have to use solar panel with a good size battery time.
Hope this helps."

Hop this helps

The cameras will be installed in a store. One of the cameras will be aiming at the cash register, so i want it to be clear enough to see the cash thats being hand out. I also want it be to able to connect to a PC, and works on a network. I like to keep an eye on the store when im at home.
Thanks in advance! Securicorp CCTV replied: "Hi, a great system to use with the PC & Network you have already is BiKal EyeSoft IP Camera Software. It will work with analogue, network IP, HD MegaPixel and USB cameras from many different manufacturers.
Simply install the software. Then connect the network cameras, these can be wireless too. Enter the password in the software and that's it. You can download a free trial from their website.
The cheapest & easiest solution is to simply buy 2 plug n play wireless ip cameras like the Candy Bar Cam. The software is free and is the easiest IP camera to setup in the world. Just plug it in to your network, no router config is needed, even for remote access and you can even view the camera on your 3G mobile phone. See. I'm not sure but I think BiKal has dealers around the world but ask them to find out."

Does any one know of a good easy to use nanny cam or surveillance camera? One that isn't to outrageously expensive. Thank you for your help! Terry replied: "Great question but not easy if you want something that works just plug in and walk away well they are not cheap. But cheap is a relative term when it comes to your children's safety.
Take a look at this site on the front page there is a short video of how easy a Nanny Cam works and how it's used. There are many styles to chose from but this is a tool for peace of mind and can be used for many other things besides checking on the Nanny. Just keep in mind that if you are not that technical than you want something that is wireless and either you plug it in or it runs on batteries. That's why those ones cost more but are worth every penny.
I hope I have been of some help. I know that deals with American made high quality Nanny Cam and Spy Equipment manufactures." What wireless surveillance camera will you recommend? I need a portable wireless surveillance camera inside my house. Little Dog replied: "What is your budget?
Does the video need to be stored? If yes, where will it be stored?
Does the camcorder need to be able to see in zero light?
Do you need color or is black & white enough?
What do you mean by "portable"? Does that mean it needs to be able to run on a battery? For how long?
Does the camera need to be hidden or can it be visible? If hidden, how hidden?
How large of an area will the camera need to cover?
Does the camera need pan/tilt/zoom capabilities? How are you expecting to control the PTZ?"
vmwebhost replied: "Hi, What are you wanting to record/watch? Your question is very open and there could be a number of options. Check this article below, you might get an idea of what you want."

-Andy" What kinds of tools would i need to drill, bolt or attach a surveillance camera to a brick wall? I want to attach a surveillance camera as well as a satellite dish and an antenna but don't know how to go about attaching them to the brick wall. mark replied: "Just buy a masonry bit for your drill, and some concrete screws. The bit will be less than $5"
tabulator32 replied: "http://www.concretefasteners.com/anchors-fasteners/index.htm?gclid=CKy03aHMno4CFQRuZQod3k5caQ"
rockgirlfury replied: "You will need your bolts, and a drill, and a concrete drill bit....
You also need the tip for the bolt you buy so you can screw them in the wall.unless you need screws...
If you get concrete bolts, or screws, then you wont need anchors, but you may need them if you get just a regular screw..
The equipment should tell you what size bit, and what kind of materials you need.
That should be it, Hope this helps."
roadjack1096 replied: "You need a hammer-drill to make holes for the anchors. Your local hardware store can hellp with the rest, i.e. masonry bits, fasteners, etc."
Tator-tot replied: "there are certain drill bits made especially for drilling holes in bricks. after you drill a hole then put a strong screw in it how old are you? im 13 and i knew that!"
Michael C replied: "First thing is a masonry bit. After that you have several choices. You can use concrete screws (blue colored) or anchors(plastic or metal) driven into the holes followed by bolts. You can also use butterfly anchors. If this is new equipment look at the instructions and see what is recommended."
David M replied: "what you need is a drill, a masonry bit and tapcons. Tapcons are long screws that are double threaded and they are blue. They are designed to be used in attaching things to masonry. You probably want to get the kind that will be flush with the wall. When putting the tapcons into the concrete, use some soap on the drill bit and screws. This will make the screws go into the concrete easier and it cools the drill bit so that the bit doesn't break."
Stoner Customs replied: "To start a hammer drill makes it alot easier to do. Now as of the materials, Tapcon screws is an option, screws and plastic anchors is another, there is also anchors made to take bolts which can hold there wait. oh yes dont forget the drill bit, it needs to be masonary. NOTE I always like to silicone around the base of the object to keep the moisture from getting trapped in behind which can damage mortar and brick."
hooksteve replied: "There are a few good ways to do this. You will need a hammer drill (these can be rented for a low price). A masonary drill bit, some of which are made just for brick. And some fasteners, you can use tapcons (masonary screws) or anchor bolts. If you use anchor bolts you will need epoxy (super strong glue) to hold it in the wall. No matter which you choose be carefull not to overtighten the fasteners as brick can be easily broken if too much pressure is applied."
chris h replied: "you want 'tapcons' there at any hardware store. the box will tell you what size masonry drill bit you will need. if thats the only holes you plan on drilling buy a cheap bit. my cordless dewalt has hammer drill capabilities you will need it if in brick, try drilling in a joint first, thats softer regular drill may work"
ramartijr replied: "You will need a hammer drill, a bit, some tap con fasteners
Mark the hols from the dish and the camera. ( Hold the units against the brick and make sure they will point where you want them to.) Then drill the holes in the brick, insert the Tap cons, and then bolt the camera and the dish to the wall." |
